We are looking for someone whose musical ability will engage the congregation during worship, in accordance with the community’s robust traditions of musical beauty and communal participation.
Our new Cantorial Soloist will help our Rabbi lead worship, prepare B’nei Mitzvah students for their ceremonies, bring music to our Religious School and Preschool students, participate/coordinate in occasional congregational and community events, and lead our musical ensembles/choirs.
Services, in a variety of styles, take place on Erev Shabbat/Shabbat morning/High Holy Days/Festivals, and are expected to include 18 B’nei Mitzvah ceremonies in 2022-2023, with 24 expected ceremonies in 2023-2024. We use Miskhan T’filah, Mishkan HaNefesh, and Mishkan HaLev as our prayer books.
S/he will work closely with our Rabbi to create meaningful, beautiful, creative, and inspiring experiences for our community. Our “key words” for this position are: collaborative, creative, personal, professional, inclusive, outgoing, helpful, and soulful.
We only hire menschen.
This is a part-time position, estimated to average 30-ish hours per week. Final salary and benefits will be adjusted based on additional hours, experience, interest, and skill set.
Applications should be submitted electronically, and should include a cover letter, resume, and a musical sample of you singing two Jewish songs of your choosing (in mp3 format).
Your cover letter should address your knowledge of and experience with leading Jewish liturgy (particularly in conjunction with Clergy), preparing students for B’nei Mitzvah celebrations, your ability to supervise/direct various ensembles (both choral and instrumental), leading children in song, chanting Torah according to the widely-used Reform trope system (found in “The Art of Cantillation” by Cantors Marshall Portnoy and Josee Wolff), and producing and participating in special “events” (such as Purim Spiels, community events, and special themed worship experiences).
Also, what moves you musically?
Deadline for applying is April 10, although we will continue to receive applications until the position is filled.

Statement on Hiring
In keeping with the highest ideals of Reform Judaism, our congregation abides by the teaching that each individual is created “B’tzelem Elohim,” in the image of God. We will include in our search all candidates regardless of age, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, or marital status.
Frequently-cited statistics show that women and people of underrepresented groups apply to jobs only when they meet 100 percent of the job qualifications. Temple Emanuel of Tempe encourages individuals to break those statistics. No candidate ever meets 100 percent of the requested qualifications, which is why we are providing a salary range based on different applicants’ skill sets. We look forward to your application!
